Samsung’s foldable phone will be among the devices showcased at its Unpacked event on February 20. The manufacturer confirmed it will discuss the smartphone during the launch event next week, but there is still no word on whether its announcement will be another preview or the official unveiling of the device.
Samsung’s recent teaser for its upcoming launch event hints at the foldable phone with the caption “the future of mobile unfolds.” While Samsung has shared many details about its new device, much about the smartphone remains unknown. One of the biggest mysteries is still what it will be called. The device has been referred to as the Galaxy F, Galaxy Flex, or Galaxy Fold, but Samsung will likely wait until next Wednesday to confirm the branding.
Samsung foldable phone design and specs
We already have an idea of how Samsung’s foldable phone will look, thanks to the preview during the brand’s developer conference last November. The device will be able to lay flat like a tablet, but can also fold inward to have the shape of a standard smartphone. Samsung CEO, DJ Koh revealed a prototype of the device to show its basic function, but the device has enclosed in a casing to hide its final form.
Samsung has also shared an ad that shows how the foldable phone may look with a stylish design. Still, there are no up close shots of the device at this point.
As for specs, Samsung has confirmed a 7.3-inch inner Infinity Flex display and a 4.58-inch cover display. Samsung’s new One UI interface will allow users to have up to three applications open simultaneously when the device is in tablet mode. Google has also confirmed its own native support of foldable devices, which should hopefully make the user experience more seamless.
Some expected features include the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip or the Samsung Exynos 9820 chip, and a battery capacity between 5,000mAh to 6,000mAh. The device will likely also run the latest Android 9 Pie operating system.
Samsung foldable phone release date and price
Rumors suggest a March market release for Samsung’s foldable smartphone but Samsung has said the device will be available during the first half of 2019. There is also word that the device may be available in very limited qualities, with only about 1 million handsets expected to ship as a market prototype.
Prospective prices for Samsung’s foldable phone are 2 million won (~$1,770) in Korea and lb1,500 to lb2,000 (~$1,930 to $2,570) in the U.K.
