“Samsung Galaxy A80 price could be high for pop-up, rotating camera”

Samsung has chosen an interesting way to ensure its latest smartphone has a selfie camera, despite featuring its infinity display, which has no hole punches or top notches. The Korean manufacturer announced the Galaxy A80 smartphones Wednesday, featuring a single triple-lens camera set up, which slides up from the back of the device and flips around to become a front camera.

The camera itself features a 48-megapixel main lens, an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens, and a time-of-flight sensor. The slide and flip function ensures that users are getting a power camera for both subject images and selfies, when front-facing cameras are often of slightly lower image quality than main cameras.

Smartphone manufacturers have been working hard to ingratiate consumers to the idea of having a bezel-less phone with no obstructions due to lenses and sensors. Other devices with similar features include the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and the Vivo V15 Pro. Similarly so, many wonder if Samsung’s sliding mechanism will hold up over time. A SamMobile hands-on review noted that despite having a time-of-flight sensor, the Galaxy A80 does not include facial recognition features. The device does include an in-display fingerprint sensor, like the Galaxy S10 flagship.

The Galaxy A80 is a higher end device, but not premium, featuring Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 730G chip. While it’s price is not yet confirmed, sources suggest the device might sell for between $700 and $800.

Other specs include a 6.7-inch Full HD New Infinity display, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, a 3,700mAh battery with super fast charging, and the Android 9 Pie operating system. Color options include Phantom Black, Angel Gold and Ghost White.

The Galaxy A80 goes on sale May 29, with availability likely focused on Asian markets.

Update: Sources have confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy A80 will cost 640 euros, which is about $732.
