“Is 5G available yet? Sprint’s ‘consistent’ network starts in four major cities”

The deployment of 5G continues in the U.S. with Sprint launching its network in four cities, including Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Kansas City. Sprint also has plans to enable 5G in other cities in the coming weeks, including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix, and Washington D.C. Once all nine cities are connected, over 11.5 million people will have access to Sprint’s 5G network.

Sprint has shared details about the specifics of its 5G deployment in the currently enabled cities. Check them out below.

Atlanta: Sprint 5G covers approximately 150 square miles and 565,000 people from downtown to Dunwoody!

Dallas-Fort Worth: Sprint 5G covers approximately 575 square miles and 1.6 million people across the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area serving Irving and downtown Fort Worth, including Sundance Square, Las Colinas, and the North Dallas area from Preston Hollow to Addison.

Houston: Sprint 5G covers approximately 165 square miles and 800,000 people across the cultural center of Houston from downtown to Memorial City Mall/City Centre Plaza.

Kansas City: Sprint is the first wireless operator to launch 5G in its hometown, with service covering approximately 225 square miles and 625,000 people from downtown Kansas City, MO, to Overland Park, KS where the company is headquartered.

The carrier has detailed that its new network is built on its Massive MIMO technology, which aims to increase and improve network capacity. The carrier has collaborated with Ericsson, which has provided the 64T64R (64 transmitters 64 receivers) Massive MIMO radios to enable 5G speeds on Sprint’s network. The radios use Sprint’s current 4G cell sites to run its 2.5 GHz mid-band spectrum, which is expected to give a smooth transition from LTE to 5G NR.

With Sprint’s 5G network now up and running, the carrier has also announced the official availability of its 5G devices, the LG V50 ThinQ 5G smartphone, and the HTC 5G Hub. The LG V50 ThinQ 5G will sell for $0 down and $24 per month on Sprint’s Flex plan, while the HTC 5G Hub will sell for $12.50 per month. The Hub also requires a high-speed data plan, for which Sprint offers 100GB for $60 per month.

Sprint also has plans to release its Samsung Galaxy S10 5G model sometime during the summer. Currently, Verizon has a launch exclusive on the device.

Early reviews on Sprint’s 5G network note that it is, in fact, fast, and significantly faster than 4G LTE speeds. However, they suggest the carrier’s speeds are not as fast in comparison Verizon’s 5G network, which launched in mid-May in Chicago and Minneapolis. Sprint has gotten accolades for its more widespread and consistent coverage across the locations where its 5G is enabled. Both CNET and Android Authority have expressed similar conclusions after testing network speeds in Dallas.
