“New Verizon-backed MVNO offers an unlimited data plan for $40”

There is a new MVNO on the block and it is a Verizon-powered service with Yahoo branding. Sounds odd? Well, the new service, called Yahoo Mobile is offering unlimited text, talk and data for $39.99 per month.

Subscribers will have access to Verizon’s 4G LTE network and will also get an unlimited mobile hotspot, ad-free email with Yahoo Mail Pro, and 24-hour customer service for their Yahoo account. The caveat is that subscribers will have to use Yahoo Mail in order to use Yahoo Mobile. When was the last time you used your Yahoo Mail or anything other than a backup email for signing up for free trials?

Never the less, users can bring their own device to the Yahoo Mobile or purchase devices, including the Google Pixel 4, the iPhone 11, and the iPhone XS through the network. Those interested can subscribe through the Yahoo Mobile website or by downloading the Yahoo Mobile app, which is available for both Android and iOS.

Some have noted that the Yahoo Mobile has very similar branding to another Verizon-powered MVNO, Visible. Currently, there is no word on if and/or how the new network may affect the already established budget brand. All we know is that Verizon Media owns Yahoo and was apparently looking for something to do with the brand. Verizon Media CEO, Guru Gowrappan released a statement with the launch of the brand, detailing how it plans to market the service in the current mobile ecosystem.

We are constantly looking for new ways to drive product innovation and synergy that unlocks value for our consumers. With the launch of Yahoo Mobile, we are continuing to evolve our business by bringing a new, personalized Yahoo experience to the market that feeds our users’ passions, and also attracts new audiences. Combining the strengths of Verizon’s assets in wireless, technology, and media will enable us to deliver a valuable consumer offering and experiences that give people more of what they want.
