“New Apple iPhone SE as Durable as iPhone 13 and iPhone 12”

Apple’s latest affordable smartphone, the third-generation iPhone SE has been put through its paces, in a series of durability tests by Allstate Protection Plans. The firm has determined that the device can hold up as well against drops and water accidents, as its flagship counterparts, such as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12.

Apple announced the third-generation iPhone SE during a spring launch event on March 10, detailing that the $429 device would fair well with drops and spills. The smartphone is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, so Allstate Protection a 30 minute dunk test in one meter of water in addition to its traditional drop tests. While many premium devices tend to have this feature come standard, it can be hit or miss as to whether a more budget friendly smartphone is rated as water resistant.

The face-down drop test for the third-generation iPhone SE yielded positive result, with only mild scratches after a six-foot fall onto a sidewalk. The back down drop test saw shattering around the lower half of the panel. The side down drop test saw more scratches along the right side, leaning toward the back. The third-generation iPhone SE also survived the 30 minute dunk test largely unscathed, with some audio muffling at first, which dried out and returned to regular functioning after about an hour.

Ultimately the third-generation iPhone SE performed almost as well as the iPhone 13 in Allstate Protection Plan’s durability tests, except the glass back paneling on the budget model left the handset vulnerable to cracking. Meanwhile, the iPhone 13 back panel is made of a sturdy aluminum that resisted cracks and scratches.

While the third-generation iPhone SE have proved to be quite sturdy, users never know when catastrophic accidents can happen. Allstate Protection Plan vice president of marketing and creative director Jason Siciliano still recommends that the device be used with a protective case can repairs can cost up to $299.

The third-generation iPhone SE went on sale globally last Friday.
