The Samsung Galaxy S10 is currently receiving a software update to patch issues with its in-display fingerprint sensor. The device is Samsung’s first flagship to release with the next-generation biometrics feature, but several reports have indicated that the sensor has been finicky and unreliable as an unlock and authentication tool.
Preminimiarly reports from Galaxy S10 users who have received the update indicate that the patch has vastly improved the functionality of the device’s in-display fingerprint sensor. The update is currently making rounds in Germany and Poland and potentially also in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, according to SamMobile. The OTA (over-the-air) update will be staggered and may take a while to reach all handsets. Users cannot attempt to pull the update manually.
Samsung’s snazzy new 2019 S series devices include the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+, which both feature in-display fingerprint sensors and both have been plagued with issues since the devices’ March release. Reports have indicated that users are experiencing frequent fingerprint authentication failures. There is also a Reddit video circulating, showing the Galaxy S10 biometrics feature being fooled by a 3D printed fingerprint.
The biometrics software update, V2.0.8.4 is aimed at improving the speed and accuracy of the fingerprint sensor. Still, some pundits note that it may simply take time for users to learn how to place their fingers on the display-embedded fingerprint sensor for a more accurate read. With no distinct director of where and how to place a finger on the display, using the Galaxy S10 fingerprint sensor can be cumbersome.
The cheaper Samsung Galaxy S10e model features a capacitive fingerprint sensor on its right side, which has been hailed as more accurate as those on the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+. Still, in-display fingerprint sensors are the overall trend among device makers who wish to make more smartphones with seamless displays that have no holes or notches.
While the Galaxy S10 devices feature the Infinity-O hole-punch displays, Samsung has also recently announced the Galaxy A80, with its seamless New Infinity display and an in-display fingerprint sensor. There is currently no word on whether the Galaxy A80 has the same sensor as the Galaxy S10, or whether its sensor works better or worst than the Galaxy S10 sensor. Tier-wise, the Galaxy S10 is a premium flagship device, while the Galaxy A80 is a high-end device. Overall, users would likely expect a better performance from the Galaxy S10 models due to their more powerful internal components.
