“Why is Google releasing a new Pixel phone?”

The Google Pixel 3a is set to be announced on May 7 but that hasn’t stopped rumors and leaks from spilling out of the mill. Most recently, there have been a number of image leaks that reveal a considerable amount of design detail about the devices, including its black, white, and purple color options.

YouTube’s This is Tech Today host, Brandon Lee shared live shots of Pixel 3a packaging, revealing 64GB and 128GB internal storage options for the device. Android Police has also gotten a hold of live images of the Pixel 3a XL, taken at a Best Buy location in Springfield, Ohio. Meanwhile, several press images have also surfaced, showcasing clear details of both the standard and XL models, including their thick display bezels, single main cameras, and rear-facing fingerprint sensors.

Enthusiasm behind the Pixel 3a launch has been mixed amid all of the major leaks. Rumors suggest the Pixel 3a will sell for $399 and the 3a XL for $479, which has piqued the interest of many fans of the smartphone line. However, many of these details come after Google has admitted that the original Pixel 3 devices were not a hit with consumers. Google has been trying for several years to appeal to  the premium market, releasing devices with powerful specifications and its latest software innovations. But the pure-Android devices haven’t been able to stand out in the ever growing high-end market, where manufacturers are constantly pushing to wow consumers with new highlight features.

Pixel 3a to help propel the Android Q launch?

Google’s old Nexus smartphone line was popular for being the hardware that showcased the purest form of Android with appealing budget prices to match. The Pixel 3a devices may be Google’s way of dipping back into this strategy to salvage its hardware division. With Pixel 3 sales being low, the Pixel 3a may be Google’s tactic for getting more of its own devices on the market ahead of the official launch of its next operating system, Android Q.

Though the Pixel 3a is expected to release with the Android 9 Pie operating system, the device will likely have quick access to Android Q betas following Google’s I/O conference. It would also be slated among the first devices to run the official software with it becomes available — likely in the late summer.

Pixel 3a hardware rumors

In addition to image leaks, several hardware details have also surfaced for the Pixel 3a devices. According to the informant, Max J, the standard Pixel 3a will feature a 5.6-inch FHD+ ( 2220x1080p resolution) gOLED display with 441 ppi pixel density and 18.5:9 aspect ratio, a 3000mAh battery with 18W Fast Charging, and a weight of about 150g.

The Pixel 3a XL is expected to feature a 6-inch FHD+ (2160x1080p resolution) gOLED display with 402 ppi pixel density and 18:9 aspect ratio, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 chip, a 3,700mAh with 18W Fast Charging, and a weight of about 170g.

Both models are expected to include Always-On Display and Now Playing screen features and to sell in Just Black, Clearly White, and Purple-ish color options. Other specs may include 4GB of RAM and 12.2-megapixel main cameras with night sight and HDR+ software features.
