“Sony 5G foldable rumored for 2020 launch”

Sony may be in the early stages of developing a foldable smartphone called the Xperia F if a recent rumor is to be believed. A report out of China suggests that Sony may be planning to launch the new form factor device sometime in 2020 with 5G connectivity.

While this rumor is far from being confirmed, details suggest the Xperia F could have Sony’s traditional 21:9 aspect ratio and an Infinity Flex display made by Samsung. The smartphone may fold along its vertical axis, making it bend more like a clamshell phone rather than like a book, as has been seen on the horizontally folding Samsung Galaxy Fold or the Huawei Mate X.

Much about this rumor still seems farfetched, considering Sony has not announced any plans to release a 5G smartphone or a foldable. It also seems unlikely that other manufacturers will be jumping to use Samsung’s foldable display when its own device has been indefinitely delayed due to issues with its screen. Many in the industry were waiting to see how Samsung and Huawei’s foldables were released and received by the public. With neither device on the market, competitors have no high-end benchmarks, on which to make tweaks and adjustments.

Still, several other companies, including Xiaomi, TCL, and Motorola have teased their plans and concepts for foldable devices. Sony has shown no indication of radically different smartphone projects in the works. It is possible that leaks could surface now that the rumor has been established but we will have to wait until that time.
