“Qualcomm commits to supporting 5G on mid-range and low-end smartphones”

As manufacturers continue releasing their first 5G powered flagship smartphones, component makers are preparing to bring the next generation network capability to mid-range and low-end devices.

In particular, Qualcomm has detailed its roadmap to enable 5G on not only more of its premium Snapdragon 800 series processing chips, but also its Snapdragon 700 series and Snapdragon 600 series chips, which commonly run on lower-priced smartphones. The supplier plans to expand its 5G-powered component offerings throughout 2020.

Some manufacturers are already experimenting with bringing 5G to lower-cost devices. Samsung recently announced the Galaxy A90 5G smartphone as one of its first mid-range 5G offerings. The device is already available in South Korea, selling for KRW 900,000 or about $740, a staunch comparison to the Galaxy Note 10 flagship, which starts at $1,099. Both of these devices run Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chip.

However, devices running 5G chips in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 700 and 600 series could potentially be even cheaper than the Galaxy A90 5G. Manufacturers including OPPO, realme, Redmi, Vivo, Motorola, HMD, and LG already have plans to release smartphones with a Snapdragon 700 5G chip in early 2020. Qualcomm has plans to announce this chip by the end of 2019. Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 600 5G chip and its subsequent smartphones are expected to make a market appearance during the second half of 2020.
