Huawei is still doing its best to keep devices with its brand on the market and has seemingly taken a page from the books of many rivals by releasing a cheaper, 4G only model of the Huawei P40, which released last March.
The Huawei P40 4G is virtually identical to the older model, with the exception of running the 4G model of the Kirin 990 chip. The original Huawei P40 runs the Kirin 990 5G, which is faster and more efficient due to its smaller size, in addition to having 5G capability and small tweaks in node processes.
The Huawei P40 4G features a 6.1-inch FHD+ display, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage, a 3,800mAh battery with 22.5W charging, and Android 10 with a EMUI 10.1 overlay.
Its triple camera rear set up includes a 50-megapixel wide-angle lens, 16-megpixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. Its 32-megapixel front camera and IR lens are housed in a pill shaped cut out on the right side of the display.
The device will be available in Dark Blue and Frost Silver when it releases in China for CNY 3,998 (~$617). Sales begin on Saturday.
The announcement of this truncated model is interesting, considering Huawei is expected to soon unveil P50, P50 Pro and Pro Plus models. As said, many brands have popularized releasing devices with near identical specs to flagships at a cheaper price. Consumers have seen brands, such as Samsung launch a flagship Galaxy S20 series and then follow up with a Galaxy S20 FE, bringing all the design and highlight features at a fraction of the price.
While the P50 series is expected to showcase many new features, such as a 5nm Kirin 9000 chip, 120Hz displays, a 1-inch Sony IMX800 sensor, and Huawei proprietary Harmony OS, the Huawei P40 4G may appeal to those who found the original P40 too hard on the pocketbooks. And with such specs, the P50 series will likely be a pricey series as well.
